Pirates Fall to W. Michigan at Golden Dome Invite

Schroeder and Thelen play well, but the Pirates fall to 0-2 with today's setback.
NOTRE DAME, IND. – Senior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) put forth their second straight strong match, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Western Michigan, 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 20-25), on Saturday morning.

The Pirates, a very young team, committed a high amount of attack errors for a second straight match to begin the season, and therefore fall to 0-2. After posting a respectable .265 attack percentage in set one, the Pirates' saw that number plummet to .081 in set two and .053 in set three.

For the second straight day, the turning point of the match was a tight first set that got away from the Pirates. Seton Hall led for most of the opening frame, and took a commanding 19-14 lead on an ace by sophomore Grace Forren (La Jolla, Calif.). The Broncos however, stormed back and scored six of the next seven points to pull even at 20-20. A kill by sophomore Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) regained the lead for Seton Hall, 23-22, but Western Michigan scored the final three points of the set to win, 25-23.

The Pirates never led in set two, as the Broncos led by as many as eight points in a 25-18 victory. Set three was much of the same with Western Michigan taking an early 3-2 lead and not looking back for a decisive 25-20 victory.

Inside the Numbers:
- Schroeder led the Pirates in kills for a second straight match. She finished with nine kills, five digs and four blocks.
- Thelen was much more efficient against Western Michigan, finishing with eight kills, only four attack errors and a team-high 12 digs.
- Junior Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) reached double-figures in digs for a second straight match. She finished with 10.
- Freshman Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Pirates with five blocks.
