Delgado Makes History in Win Over St. John’s
1/22/2017 4:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) left no doubt that he is the best big man in the BIG EAST by recording 20 rebounds on top of 21 points in a pivotal 86-73 Seton Hall men's basketball victory over visiting St. John's Sunday afternoon at Prudential Center. It is the first 20-20 game for The Hall since Eddie Griffin vs. Saint Peter's on Nov. 27, 2000 and just the 14th to occur in any BIG EAST regular season conference game.
Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 11 points and eight rebounds. Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 10 points and a career-best eight assists, and sophomore Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) finished with 10 points. Junior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) played his usual solid defense and tallied eight points, including his first career triple, and five boards.
St. John's (9-12, 3-5 BIG EAST) was led offensively by Marcus Lovett (22 points) and Bashir Ahmed (19 points).
Turning Point
The Pirates trailed 10-9 at 14:59 in the opening half before the big guys went to work down low with six points from Delgado and four from Nzei to help lead a 10-2 SHU run to take a 19-12 advantage with 11:06 to go in the half.
Later, Powell and Carrington drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions to spark an 18-4 run from the 6:08 mark down to 1:07 to take a 44-22 lead, and ultimately a 46-26 advantage at the break. Powell scored seven of his 19 points during that span, and the Red Storm was 2-for-6 from the floor and could not convert the front end of a 1-and-1.
Carrington hammered home a dunk following a steal by senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) on the opening possession of the second half. The Pirates converted their first four field goal attempts of the final frame including a three-point play from Delgado.
Delgado scored seven of the team's first nine points coming out of the break including a layup at 17:06 to give Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4 BIG EAST) a 27-point lead, its biggest of the day, at 17:06.
Inside the Numbers

- SHU held a 45-33 advantage on the glass to finish with a rebounding edge for the 16th time out of 19 games this season.
- SHU limited the conference's sixth-leading scorer, freshman Shamorie Ponds (17.1 PPG) to just nine points on 3-of-11 shooting.
- The Pirates had five players score in double figures for the first time in conference play this season and first time since the Quinnipiac game on Nov. 25.
