Delgado Grabs 22 Rebounds in Setback to No. 11 Butler
1/26/2017 12:49:00 AM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) continued his historical season on Wednesday night, becoming the first player in BIG EAST history to pull down 20 or more rebounds in back-to-back conference regular season games; but the Seton Hall men's basketball team was outlasted by No. 11 Butler, 61-54, in a scrappy defensive bout at Prudential Center.
Delgado added 12 points and led the Pirates (13-7, 3-5 BIG EAST) with three assists in a game-high 35 minutes, while juniors Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 12 points each. Fellow classmate Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) produced yet another outstanding defensive showing with seven rebounds, a season-best three blocks and four steals, which matched a career high.
The nationally ranked Bulldogs (18-3, 7-2 BIG EAST) had four players score in double figures led by Andrew Chrabascz (16) and Avery Woodson (15).
Turning Point
The Hall struggled offensively throughout the first half and shot just 7-of-33 (21.2 percent). The Pirates trailed 20-10 with 2:57 to go in the opening frame, but cut the Butler lead to 26-19 at the break.
Butler grabbed its largest lead of the game at 37-24 with 16:32 remaining before The Hall found its stroke. The Pirates responded with a 10-0 run over the next 3:03 that brought the Seton Hall faithful to its feet, and included seven points from Rodriguez on 3-of-4 shooting, and three points and five rebounds by Delgado.
SHU took its first lead since they scored the opening basket of the game when freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) connected on a triple following a great find from Delgado to make it 45-44 with 6:33 to go.
With the game tied at 49-49, the Bulldogs converted a three-point play before Kamar Baldwin canned a shot from beyond the arc to take a 55-49 lead at 2:48. Kethan Savage then hit both free-throws on Butler's next possession to take a nine-point lead that effectively put the game out of reach for The Hall.
Inside the Numbers
- A significant factor in the game was shooting from beyond the arc, as Butler finished 8-for-20 (40.0 percent), and SHU shot 4-of-24 (16.7 percent).
- The Pirates held a 52-43 rebounding advantage and outscored the Bulldogs 24-18 in the paint. SHU has now outrebounded its opponent in 17 of 20 games and seven of eight BIG EAST contests.
- Delgado's 22 rebounds are the most by any Pirate since the school joined the BIG EAST in the 1979. He finished with 20 rebounds in the team's last game vs. St. John's. It is the first time in conference history that any player has recorded back-to-back 20+ rebound performances in conference regular season games.
- Additionally, Delgado is one of four student-athletes from a "Power Basketball Six" conference since 1996 to have back-to-back 20-rebound games (courtesy of FOX Sports & Anthony Masterson):
- Tim Duncan, Wake Forest (1996-97)
- Blake Griffin, Oklahoma (2008-09)
- Caleb Swanigan, Purdue (2016-17)
- After tonight, Delgado's 12.9 rebounds per game overall and 4.5 offensive rebounds per game are both No. 1 in the country.
- The BIG EAST's active career leader in double-doubles, Delgado picked up his 15th of the season and 38th of his career. During his career, SHU is 30-8 when he double dips.
- The Hall held Butler to 19-of-54 shooting (35.2 percent) from the field, marking the first time all season the Pirates lost when holding an opponent to under 40 percent shooting (6-1).
- SHU held a 17-9 advantage in second chance points after entering the game averaging 13.2 with a +4.0 margin.
- As a team, SHU finished with five blocks, the second most of the season and the most since Dec. 7 vs. California.
- The loss snapped a 10-game home winning streak for the Pirates. Entering Wednesday night, the last team to beat the Pirates at Prudential Center was the Bulldogs on Feb. 10, 2016.
- With the excellent start to his junior campaign, Delgado has aligned himself with some of the elite rebounders in BIG EAST history. He is averaging 10.86 rebounds through 44 career conference games, and is currently fifth in league history.
- Michael Smith, Providence (1991-94) - 11.66 RPG
- Kentrell Gransberry, USF (2006-08) - 11.00 RPG
- Derrick Coleman, Syracuse (1986-90) - 10.95 RPG
- DeJuan Blair, Pittsburgh (2007-09) - 10.94 RPG
- Angel Delgado, Seton Hall (2014-present) - 10.86 RPG
- The star-studded junior class of Carrington, Delgado and Rodriguez continues to climb the ranks on the SHU all-time scoring list. Carrington's 1,094 points are good for 34th all-time, while Delgado and Rodriguez (917 points) are tied for 48th. Additionally, Delgado's 880 rebounds are the seventh most in school history.
- Butler has gotten the best of the Pirates in the all-time series and have won seven of eight including each of the last five. Six of the eight all-time meetings have been decided by seven points or less.
The Pirates travel to Cincinnati to take on Xavier in a critical BIG EAST game on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 9 p.m. It will be broadcast nationally on FS1 with the broadcast team of Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery, and simulcast on FOX Sports GO. Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the radio call on WMCA 570, simulcast on the Pirate Sports Network via SHUPirates.com or the SHU Pirates Mobile App.
