VERONA, N.J. - Seton Hall student-athletes representing seven different varsity programs visited F.N. Brown Elementary School in nearby Verona, N.J. as part of the "Reading with the Pirates" outreach initiative on Friday.
Â
Now in its fifth year, the "Reading with the Pirates" initiative is a part of Seton Hall Athletics' Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders (H.A.L.L.) Program and the effort is directed at promoting the value of reading through student-athlete visits to area schools.
Â
Participating Pirates included: Softball's Alannah Basile (Levittown, N.Y.), volleyball's Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.), Cross Country's Ricky Stephens (Stony Point, N.Y.), swimmers Emily Barnard (Galloway, N.J.) and Collin Dunn (Litchfield, Conn.), Sam Bozzella (West Orange, N.J.) and Kat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) of women's basketball and Lauren Garcia (Westport, Conn.), Katie Landes (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) of women's soccer.
Â
"As an education major, I love to take advantage of opportunities to read and interact with children," said Kenneweg. "I will be beginning my student teaching soon, so a program like "Reading with the Pirates" helps me as much as it does the kids."
Â
F.N. Brown principal Dr. Anthony Lanzo, a proud Seton Hall alum, greeted the group of 10 Pirates and escorted them to several classrooms containing students ranging in level from Kindergarten through fourth grade. In each classroom, the students were split into small groups containing one Pirate reader.
Â
"I love kids," said Garcia. "If I were their age, I would definitely enjoy having student-athletes come and read and share some of their experiences. "The students were really well behaved and good listeners."
Â
The Pirates spent a little more than an hour with the children of F.N. Brown before heading back to campus to resume their regular class and practice schedules.
Â
"Something so simple like reading a book can make a difference in the lives of young people," said Landis. "It's wonderful to be able to interact with them and lend a positive influence. We had a great time."
