TICKETS TO TUESDAY VS. GEORGETOWN
Rosemont, Ill. - Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) led four Seton Hall men's basketball 15-point scorers with 19 on 8-of-15 shooting, and Angel Delgado recorded his 10th consecutive double-double as the Pirates used clutch end-of-game free throw shooting to top DePaul, 82-79, Saturday at Allstate Arena.Â
In addition to Rodriguez's 19, junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in 18 points and had six assists against only two turnovers. Delgado finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 13 of his 15 points in a red-hot first half.
Seton Hall (18-10, 8-8 BIG EAST) has now won five of its last seven games and has gotten back to the .500 mark in conference play for the first time since being 2-2 on Jan. 11. In the BIG EAST standings race, the Pirates are now in sixth, but just one game behind third-place Creighton with Xavier and Marquette in between. The Hall is assured it can finish no lower than eighth.
Billy Garrett, Jr., led DePaul (9-20, 2-14 BIG EAST) with 26 points and six assists. Eli Cain added 21 points and four assists.
Turning Point
DePaul took a brief 23-22 lead with four minutes left in the first half, but Powell connected on a three-pointer to put the Pirates up for what turned out to be for good. It sparked a 27-6 run that spilled over into the second half. Delgado had the big three-point play at 17:38, and Rodriguez drilled a three-pointer at 16:26 to give The Hall a 20-point advantage, 49-29.
DePaul though kept chipping away at the lead and fought all the way back to make it a one-point game, 77-76, with 21 seconds to go on a wild catch-and-shoot three from Garrett, Jr.Â
The Pirates, held without a field goal made in the final 5:50, used clutch free throw shooting and defense to hold on in the waning seconds. Carrington made a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to put the Pirates up three, 79-76. DePaul then got the ball into Garrett Jr.'s hands, but the Pirates walled up on him on the baseline with nowhere to go. With a five-second count looming, Garrett Jr., threw wildly out hoping to find someone, and he found Powell, who stole the ball, drew a foul and made both free throws to go up five, 81-76, with six seconds to play.
