Powell's Game-Winner Lifts Pirates to OT Win vs. PC
2/9/2017 12:37:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Newark, N.J. – Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) hit what proved to be the game-winning basket with 7.9 seconds remaining in overtime as the Seton Hall men's basketball team overcame a 15-point first half deficit to complete a 72-70 victory over Providence at Prudential Center Wednesday night.
Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) collected his 18th double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Fellow junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered his best performance in conference play this season and finished with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and just two turnovers in a career-high 44 minutes. Powell totaled 14 points in 34 minutes off the bench for Seton Hall (15-8, 5-6 BIG EAST).
Rodney Bullock led Providence (14-11, 4-8 BIG EAST) with 19 points including a 9-for-10 mark at the charity stripe.
Turning Point
A 22-3 first-half Providence run put the Pirates behind by 15 points, 27-12, before the Pirates closed the gap to just five at halftime, 41-36.
Late in the game, the Pirates led 58-54 after a Delgado layup at the 6:40 mark. From there, the Pirates went cold as their last field goal of the period came on a sophomore Mike Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) dunk at 4:03. They missed their next three shots and had two turnovers while Bullock reclaimed the lead for the Friars with a jumper with 43 seconds to go, making it 61-60. With the game tied at 61-61 following a game-tying free throw from junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), Providence held possession with 33 seconds to go in regulation. Staunch defense from Rodriguez and the Pirates forced a shot clock violation, and the game went to overtime following an off-target last-second desperation heave from Powell.
Providence took a 66-63 lead following an Alpha Diallo layup with 2:59 remaining in the extra period. Next, the Delgado converted a layup to make it a one-point game. After the Friars missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the other end, Carrington connected on his biggest shot of the night, a three-pointer, to give The Hall a 68-66 advantage with 1:56 to go.
The Friars responded with a jumper from Emmitt Holt to square things again at 68-68. Carrington then answered with another clutch bucket to retake the lead. Following a pair of Holt free throws, the Pirates had the ball with the game tied at 70 with 38 seconds remaining. Powell drove the lane, absorbed contact, and connected on a difficult layup that ultimately sealed the win for the Pirates after the Friars missed a tying jumper with two seconds remaining.
