Carrington's 22 Not Enough in Setback to Arkansas
3/17/2017 5:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Greenville, S.C. – Five Pirates scored in double figures on Friday, including a team-high 22 from junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but the Seton Hall men's basketball team suffered a 77-71 loss to Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament First Round at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
For the Pirates (21-12) Carrington's 22 points came on 8-of-17 shooting including a 3-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) secured his 27th double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) poured in 11 points while freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) and junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 10 points each.
Moses Kingsley led Arkansas (26-9) with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting.
Turning Point
Seton Hall trailed the Razorbacks 51-46 with 12:38 remaining in the second half, but a 16-3 run over the next three minutes gave the Pirates their largest lead of the game at 62-54 with 9:29 to go. Powell and Carrington connected on triples on consecutive possessions to jump-start the run, while Carrington finished with eight points and Jones scored five during the stretch.
However, the Razorbacks responded by making five consecutive field goals and used an 8-0 run capped by a Kingsley layup to take a 70-68 lead with 2:40 remaining.
Rodriguez made one of two at the line on the ensuing Pirates possession to draw within one of the lead, and Carrington gave The Hall a 71-70 advantage on an acrobatic layup with 1:46 on the clock.
Arkansas went back on top 72-71 with 57 seconds to go. SHU then had a chance to retake the lead, but turned the ball over on consecutive possessions, and Arkansas went 5-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
