Chatham, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team fell in the opening doubles flight but responded with back-to-back wins to earn the point, and went a perfect 6-0 in singles play to record a 7-0 sweep of Villanova in the spring season home opener at CenterCourt Sports on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) evened doubles play with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 flight after falling at the top spot. Freshmen Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) and Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) then secured the point for the Pirates (5-5) with a thrilling 7-6 (3) win over Villanova's (0-11) Burdick and Bajet.
To lead off singles play, junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) defeated Evans, 6-2, 6-1, for her eighth victory at the No. 1 singles flight this season. Sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot.
Matson, Kangwa, Kim and freshman Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) all picked up wins in their respective singles matchups.
"We were all excited for our first home match at CenterCourt," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Returning from California, we had to adjust to indoor play, and keep building on what we learned. Today we sent a clear message that we want to keep getting better and continue to take care of business. We now turn our focus to LIU Brooklyn and Xavier, and will look to keep momentum going."
Up next, the Pirates host LIU Brooklyn on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m., and Xavier on Sunday, March 26 at 12 p.m.
