Pirates Deliver Thrilling 4-3 Win Over LIU Brooklyn

South Orange, N.J. – Freshman Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Nethlerlands) scored the match-winning point for the Seton Hall women's tennis team on Friday with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to secure a 4-3 victory for the Pirates over visiting LIU Brooklyn at CenterCourt Sports Morristown.
Jansen also played a crucial role in securing the doubles point for the Pirates (6-5) when she paired with freshman Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) for a 6-3 win at the No. 3 flight. Earlier, junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) delivered a 6-3 victory over Isabella Wagener and Jennifer Gogova at the No. 1 spot.
Freshman Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) put The Hall ahead 2-0 with a win at No. 3 singles. However, LIU Brooklyn (5-4) won the next two singles matchups to even things at 2-2.
Next, junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) earned a 7-5, 7-5 win over Ana Leonte at the No. 5 flight. The Blackbirds responded with a tight victory at the No. 1 spot before Jansen secured the clinching point for the Pirates.
"This match showcased our depth and I'm really proud of our freshman stepping up and the leadership of our captains," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Our excellent support from teammates led to intense hustle and allowed us to fight through adversity."
Up next, the Pirates resume BIG EAST play with a 12:30 home match on Sunday against Xavier at CenterCourt Sports Morristown.
