Los Angeles, Calif. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team won the doubles point Wednesday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a hard-fought 5-2 match against Utah State to round out its two-match West Coast trip.
Junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) opened the match with a 6-0 sweep of Ekaterina Tugarinova and Maggie O'Meara at No. 1 doubles. It was the fifth doubles victory of the season for the duo of Strike and Fajnorova.
The Pirates (4-5) sealed the doubles point when freshmen Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) and Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) picked up a 6-4 win at the No. 3 flight over Lucy Octave and Monika Van de Vondel.
Utah State (9-4) then won each of the first three singles matches before Fajnorova defeated Tugarinova at the No. 2 spot, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. However, the Aggies sealed the victory with wins in the final two singles flights.
"Utah State is a very tough team," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "The two opponents on this trip did a nice job of breaking us down, and it has been a great learning experience for us moving forward. We will use the experience from the last two matches to prepare as we open conference play next week."
Up next, the Pirates open BIG EAST competition against Villanova in the first home match of the spring on Friday, March 17 at 1 p.m. at CenterCourt Sports in Morristown, N.J.
