PHOENIX - Former Seton Hall men's basketball star Nick Galis has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and will take part in ceremonies Sept. 7-9, 2017 in Springfield, Mass., the Hall of Fame announced Saturday at the Final Four. Galis is the fourth inductee to have Seton Hall Athletics ties, joining former Pirates student-athletes Bob Davies and Bobby Wanzer and former head coach John "Honey" Russell.
Galis, who was inducted into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, had an incredible basketball career not only in South Orange, but also overseas, where he became arguably the greatest Greek player in the country's history.Â
Galis arrived at Seton Hall after a stellar high school career playing at Union City High School in Union City, N.J. He broke out in his junior year at The Hall, averaging 17.3 points and 4.5 assists and shooting 52.1 percent from the field. Then came one of the most memorable individual performances in Seton Hall history, as Galis dominated during his senior season 1978-79. He averaged 27.5 points, which was third-best in the country, 3.9 assists and 2.0 steals. His 743 points scored was fourth-best all-time in Seton Hall single-season history at the time and still ranks fifth-best today. At season's end, he was named the recipient of the Haggerty Award as the Metro New York area's top player.
Galis finished his career with 1,651 points, which at the time was fifth-best in school history and still ranks 11th today. In his four seasons with the Pirates, the team's record was 68-42 (.618).
Galis went on to an illustrious professional career. He led ARIS of Thessaloniki to seven straight Greek League championships and eight overall (1983, 1985-91). Galis won a European Championship gold medal and European Championships MVP in 1987, while also taking home silver in 1989. He led the Greece A-1 League in scoring a record 12 straight seasons, averaging 33.4 points per game in his career. Galis was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991, and is a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame (2007).
The Class of 2017 will be enshrined on Friday, September 8 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball and home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
