Resilient Pirates Edged by St. John’s

South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team went wire-to-wire with first place St. John's Sunday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a 4-3 decision in a spirited match at the Tennis Courts at Ivy Hill Park.
Sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) collaborated for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles for the Pirates (7-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) to even the point at 1-1. However, St. John's (15-3, 6-0 BIG EAST) clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 flight.
Freshman Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) evened the match after winning at the No. 4 singles spot, 6-0, 6-1. The Johnnies then won the next two points before freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to cut the deficit to 3-2.
St. John's clinched the match with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot, and Kangwa delivered an impressive 7-6, 6-4 (10-7) victory in the No. 6 position.
The Pirates tested the perennial BIG EAST power St. John's Sunday after being swept by the Johnnies in the previous two meetings.
"The beauty of college tennis is that a point can come from anyone at any time," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Some of our younger players had to step up today and they did. Taal, Matson and Kangwa did such a great job of staying positive, and were boosted by the morale from their teammates. After the way we played today, we are not going to be sneaking up on anyone in the BIG EAST. We are looking forward to a great week of training and will be looking to take the last two of the regular season by storm."
Following Sunday's match, fans, friends and alumni received autographed posters to go along with complimentary pizza before having access to open courts with the Pirates.
Up next, The Hall returns to action at DePaul on Saturday, April 22 at 3 p.m. then heads to Milwaukee for a 12 p.m. matchup with Marquette on Sunday.
