5/2/2017 5:51:00 PM | Men's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines) and sophomore Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) tied as tournament runners-up, and the Seton Hall men's golf team finished second by just one stroke as the 2017 BIG EAST Championship completed on Tuesday.
The Championship came down to the final hole of the tournament. Marquette held a two-stroke lead with Nagai and the Golden Eagles' Matt Bachmann approaching the par-4, 18th green. Nagai had a 15-foot putt for birdie, but narrowly missed, and settled for par. Bachmann's approach nearly found sand, and he had to chip onto the green. Bachmann missed a long par putt, but was able to knock in a close bogey putt to win the tournament for Marquette by a single stroke.
For a second straight day, the Pirates improved, shooting a 9-over-par, 297, on Tuesday. For the tournament, The Hall finished 36-over-par with a 304-299-297-900. Marquette, who entered the day 17 strokes behind the leader DePaul, fired a 2-under-par, 286, to edge the Pirates for the title. The Blue Demons faded to fourth at 44-over-par. Georgetown finished third, only a stroke behind the Pirates at 37-over-par.
Seton Hall's 36-over-par, 900, is its lowest score in the four years the BIG EAST Championship has been held at Callawassie Island. It's only the second time in program history that the Pirates have finished as the team runner-up.
Go was the top Pirate finisher for a second straight day. The 2016 BIG EAST individual champion used four birdies and a 1-under-par back nine to shoot an even-par, 72, on Tuesday. For his final BIG EAST Championship, he tallied a 2-over-par, 76-70-72-218. Go's end result is the 26th top-10 finish of his career and the 16th top-5 finish, both career Seton Hall records.
Nagai was steady as ever, recording 15 pars to go with two bogeys and one birdie for his second straight 1-over-par, 73. For the tournament, he finished with a 2-over-par, 72-73-73-218. Nagai finishes the 2016-17 year with a 72.42 stroke average, which breaks the Seton Hall record for scoring average as a sophomore.
Go and Nagai, as well as Butler's Joey Arcuri, tied for second place, two strokes behind the individual champion, Marquette's Matt Bachmann.
Sophomore Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) saved his best round of the tournament for Tuesday. He had three birdies in route to a 2-over-par, 74. Yeom tied for 19th for the three-day event, finishing with a 15-over-par, 81-76-74-231.
Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday as well. The freshman had only two problematic holes, and otherwise would have been only 1-over-par. Including holes No. 5 and No. 7, he finished the afternoon with a 6-over-par, 78. For the championship, he was 23-over-par with an 81-80-78-239.
Junior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) had a tough start to his round, but was only 2-over-par on the back nine, including a birdie on the 18th hole. He finished the third round with a 9-over-par, 81. For the tournament, he was 21-over-par with a 75-81-81-237.
