NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) finished with a team-high 16 points, including 13 in the second half, and the Seton Hall men's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit late, but ultimately fell, 66-64, to Saint Louis on Saturday at the Prudential Center.
Powell, junior Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) and sophomore Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) all scored in double-figures for the Pirates. McKnight tallied a season-high 14 points, and Mamukelashvili tallied a season-high 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Pirates trailed by as many as 12 points, 48-36, with 14:20 remaining in the game, and rallied to cut the lead to only one point, 65-64, but couldn't draw even.
Turning Point:
Both offenses started the game off slowly, but the Billikens used a 7-2 run to take an early 12-11 advantage. A layup by junior Romaro Gill (St. Thomas, Jamaica) temporarily put The Hall back in front, 21-20, but Saint Louis responded with a 11-2 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Dion Wiley, to grab their largest lead of the half, 31-23, with only four minutes left before halftime.
The Hall (1-2) cut into the Billiken lead, but trailed by five, 33-28, at the break. The largest first half discrepancy was on the glass, with Saint Louis out-rebounding the Pirates, 22-to-9.
Saint Louis (4-0) grew their lead to as many as 12 points, 48-36, with 14:20 remaining in regulation, but the Pirates methodically chipped away, and a layup by Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) cut the deficit to only four, 54-50, with 7:49 to go. The Billikens attempted to pull away, but the Pirates again cut the lead to four, 62-58, on a pair of Powell free throws with 2:02 to go. After a stout defensive stand, the Pirates went back to the free-throw line, and two more points by McKnight with only 1:39 to play, cut the lead to two.
Down four with 9.6 seconds remaining, Powell drilled a three-pointer to claw the Pirates to within one point, 65-64. After Saint Louis made one free throw, Mamukelashvili had a three-point attempt to win the game at the buzzer, but it missed the mark.
