Overland Park, Kan. – Seton Hall senior Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) was one of only 30 student-athletes nationwide to be named a candidate for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's basketball.
Nzei, who is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration here at Seton Hall after earning his bachelor's degree in Economics this past May, is the only player from a BIG EAST Conference program to be listed among the 30 candidates.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's Final Four® this spring.
A mainstay on the floor for the Pirates over the last four years, Nzei epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete, excelling in all aspects of student life. On the court, the power forward has appeared in 109 games, is closing in on 500 career points, helped lead Seton Hall to the 2016 BIG EAST Championship and is one of only a handful of Pirates to appear in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Off the court, he is a member of Seton Hall's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), is a member of the NABC Honor Court and is a four-time Academic All-BIG EAST selection. His exploits as a speaker and community leader led to an invitation to the Learfield Intercollegiate Sports Forum to serve as one of only six student-athlete panelists at their prestigious annual event in New York City.
