SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Head coach Natalie Desjardins announced the 2019 Seton Hall women's golf spring schedule on Friday. The Pirates will participate in six tournaments this spring.
The Pirates will begin competition this spring at the Rio Verde Invitational for a fifth straight year played on Quail Run at Rio Verde Country Club in Arizona, Feb. 22-24. Last spring, the Pirates claimed the team championship of the event for the second time in four years with a 38-over-par, 307-296-299-902, coming from behind in the final round. Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) tied for seventh place among 97 individual golfers with an 8-over-par, 73-76-75-224 to lead The Hall. The Pirates best showing at Rio Verde came in 2015 when they won the event at 32-over-par.
For a second straight year, Seton Hall will play in the River Landing Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, March 4-5. The three-round tournament will take place on the River Course of River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C. Last spring, the Pirates finished 10th among 14 schools with a 46-over-par, 315-302-293-910. Kness and Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) tied for the Seton Hall lead, and 33rd place overall at 8-over-par. Both Pirates had an even-par, 72, in round three.
Two weeks later, the Pirates will play three rounds of golf at the William & Mary Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va., March 17-19. William & Mary hosts two tournaments each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Although Seton Hall is a regular at the fall event, this is the first time it will play the Griffin's spring event. The Hall finished third at Kingsmill to open the fall season in 2017 with a 28-over-par, 296-296-300-892, finishing just four strokes out of first place. Win and Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) both registered top-10 finishes. Sager led the Pirates with a 6-over-par, 74-70-78-222, while Win was one stroke behind with a 7-over-par, 72-79-72-223. Seton Hall won the William & Mary Invitational in 2016.
The Hall will play in a new tournament, the Edisto Island Invitational, March 30-April 1 on the Plantation Course at Edisto in Edisto Island, S.C. The tournament, featuring co-hosts College of Charleston and Charleston Southern, will be three rounds played over three days.
The Pirates will return to the Buckeye Invitational, hosted by Ohio State University, April 13-14. The three-round event, held over two days will be played at Ohio State's Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. This will be the third time in the last four years that Seton Hall has played in the tournament. Last spring, the Pirates placed 14th with a 47-over-par, 309-314-623, in a rain-shortened event. Sager led The Hall at 9-over-par with a 75-78-153.
Finally, the Pirates will return to Callawassie Golf Club in Callawassie Island, S.C., April 19-21 for the annual BIG EAST Conference Championship. It's the fourth straight year that the conference's marquee event is at Callawassie. Last spring, the Pirates placed second with a 59-over-par, 314-302-307-923. Kness, Win and former Pirate Cassie Pantelas all tied for fourth place at 14-over-par, and therefore were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Pirates will be seeking their fourth BIG EAST Championship since the program started prior to the 2010-11 season, and their second at Callawassie. Even though The Hall won the BIG EAST title in 2016 at Callawassie, their best team performance at the resort resulted last season.
