Powell, Rodriguez Lead in Pirates Loss at Georgetown
2/10/2018 7:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - The Seton Hall men's basketball team battled back from a 17-point, second-half deficit at Georgetown to take a one-point lead and then stand tied with the Hoyas with under 30 seconds remaining, but Marcus Derrickson's three-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as Georgetown escaped with an 83-80 victory over the Pirates Saturday at Capital One Arena.
Seton Hall (17-8, 6-6 BIG EAST) had a chance to tie, but the three-point attempt by sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.), who had hit six triples in the second half, missed the mark. Powell had a game-high 25 points. Senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) added 24 points, and senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded his 67th career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Derrickson led Georgetown (14-10, 4-9 BIG EAST) with 22 points and 18 rebounds.
Turning Point
After a rough first half that extended into an early second-half, 17-point deficit, the Pirates roared back with a 14-1 run as Powell got it going with a pair of three-pointers, and Rodriguez added three buckets, including a lay-in at 16:10 to make it a 51-47 contest.
The Hall then trailed by eight, 67-59, with 7:19 remaining in the game when Powell knocked down a three, Delgado came up with a steal, and Rodriguez threw down a slam to pull within three. Then senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) rejected a Jessie Govan shot, leading to Powell lining up another three ball, which he sank to tie the game at 67-67. Delgado followed a possession later with a layup to give the Pirates a 69-67 advantage with 5:36 to go.
Powell hit his fifth three-pointer of the half at 4:10 to put the Pirates up 72-71, but it was quickly answered by a Jamorko Pickett three to put the Hoyas back on top, and Georgetown extended the lead to five with 1:21 to play.
The Hall had one more run in it as Powell made a traditional three-point play on a drive to the basket, and then Rodriguez blocked a three-point attempt that led to a senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fast break dunk to tie things up at 80-80 with about 30 seconds remaining.Â
Georgetown then ran the clock down and found Derrickson for a three-pointer that he swished and drew a foul. The four-point play could have iced it, but he missed the free throw, allowing Seton Hall to set up for the tie. It was a perfectly executed play to give Powell an open look, but the shot did not fall.
