NEW YORK - Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 17 points and hit a three-point play with 11 seconds remaining in the game to put the Seton Hall men's basketball team up one point over Butler, but Tyler Wideman cleaned up a Kamar Baldwin miss with a put-back layup with 3.6 seconds left to lift the Bulldogs past the Pirates, 75-74, Thursday night in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden.
No. 6 seed Butler (20-12), which only led for 1:28 of the 40-minute contest, advances to face No. 2 seed Villanova in the semifinals. No. 3 seed Seton Hall (21-11) lost its first conference tournament quarterfinal since 2003 and will now turn its attention to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his 17 points, Carrington issued seven assists and grabbed six rebounds. Senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) scored 12 points, all in the first half, and senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) poured in 13 points and nine rebounds.
Turning Point
Seton Hall built a 14-point lead in the first half, but Butler hung tough and cut the deficit to eight at the half, 43-35.
In the second half, Seton Hall went cold on offense, shooting only 8-for-28 from the field. This opened up opportunities for the Bulldogs to make it a game as they got to within one, 58-57, with 8:12 to play.
Delgado woke the Pirates up with a dunk to spark a 6-0 run, but Baldwin had a pair of "and-ones" and then tied the game at 66-66 with a three-pointer at 3:35.
With the Pirates trailing by two, sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) buried a huge three-pointer with under a minute to go to reclaim a one-point lead, but Baldwin again came through with a slash to the basket to go up, 72-71. It was 73-71 when Carrington drove to the basket and got the and-one layup with 11 seconds to go, putting The Hall on top 74-73.
That set the stage for Butler as Baldwin drove to the basket and had a clear look that missed. Wideman was in perfect position for the offensive rebound and put-back, Butler's 10th offensive rebound of the game.
Powell's desperation three at the buzzer missed.
