EASTON, PA. – Seton Hall women's golf assistant coach Debby Murphy has qualified for the 2018 U.S. Senior Women's Open to be held at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill., July 12-15.
Murphy fired a 5-over-par, 77, in a qualifier administered by the Golf Association of Philadelphia at Northampton Country Club on June 18.
Murphy's round included two birdies – both which qualified as near aces. On No. 13 (par-3, 153 yards), Murphy's 5-hybrid tee shot landed on the front of the green and rolled only inches past the hole. Three holes later, her 8-iron tee shot on the par-3, 16th hole, nestled to within just three feet of the cup.
Murphy, a teaching professional at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., wasn't sure she'd take a chance at qualifying. She hadn't played a full round since December.
"One of my students said, 'Are you kidding me? You need to go out and try to qualify' so I gave it a try. I hadn't been playing, but now I'm glad I did," said Murphy, who also competes in speed golf championships. "I'm hoping my fitness and energy levels will make up for a lack of playing and prep as my time has been extremely limited with my teaching and coaching schedule."
Murphy has served as an assistant coach for the Seton Hall women's golf team for six of the program's eight seasons, spanning two head coaches.
Murphy rejoined the Pirates prior to the start of the 2014-15 academic year and was instrumental in helping guide the team to their second straight BIG EAST Championship. Murphy's Pirates followed up that performance with their third straight title in 2016. For their coaching efforts, Murphy and then head coach Sara Doell were named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
"I've heard amazing things about Chicago Golf Club, the course and the venue are spectacular," Murphy said. "Can't wait to get out there!!"
