Nzei Named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year

NEW YORK - Senior Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named the 2019 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced at its annual awards press conference Wednesday inside Madison Square Garden.
Nzei is the fifth-ever Seton Hall recipient of this award and first since 1996, when Adrian Griffin was the winner. Arturas Karnisovas was a two-time recipient of the award in 1993 and 1994, and Ramon Ramos was the first recipient back in 1989.
The senior captain is a student-athlete in the truest form, contributing immensely both on and off the court. On the court, he is a top-100 all-time scorer for Seton Hall, currently tied for 85th on the career points chart. This season, he became a full-time starter and is averaging 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds while sporting a team-high 61.9 field goal percentage which also ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.
Nzei is about to play his 132nd career game for The Hall, which will put him into a tie for first all-time in school history.
Off the court, Nzei is already a graduate of Seton Hall, having earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics in May 2018, graduating with a 3.546 GPA. He is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration here at The Hall. He is a four-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team, two-time member of the NABC Honors Court and five-time selection to the Seton Hall Dean's List. This past summer, Nzei completed a competitive internship on Wall Street with Cantor Fitzgerald, a respected financial services firm.
Nzei is a part of a Seton Hall program that emphasizes classroom success alongside basketball success and skill development. The Pirates have had a team cumulative GPA over 3.0 at the end of each of the last four academic years and has had 44 BIG EAST All-Academic team selections in head coach Kevin Willard's tenure.Â
