The No. 3 seed Pirates have now advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals for the fourth time in six season and will play No. 2 seed Marquette Friday night at 9 p.m., on FS1.
Powell, who surpassed the previous record of 27 held by Creighton's Doug McDermott in the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament, was 11-for-21 from the field, 4-for-10 from three and 5-for-7 at the free throw line. His 31 points are the fourth-most by a Pirate in a BIG EAST Tournament game.
Sophomore Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) had his second straight double-double and fifth of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pirates held Georgetown to its lowest point total since early November.

Turning Point
It was all Hall in the first half as the Pirates blitzed the Hoyas with a bevy of plays inside and out. Powell gave the Pirates their first double-digit lead at 22-12 with a three-pointer. Then with the Pirates up 25-15, Powell thrilled the crowd by first getting a backcourt steal off Kaleb Johnson and slamming home a dunk and then on the next Hoyas possession, stealing a pass from Jessie Govan and feeding sophomore Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) for a layup. The lead was 29-15 with 8:35 to go first half.
Mamukelashvili hit a three and a pair of free throws to put the Pirates up 20, 35-15, and then Powell put on a show in the final four minutes of the half. He scored 10 of his 29 first-half points in the final 3:28, including a pair of deep three-pointers to send The Garden into a frenzy. The Pirates went into halftime leading 53-28.
The Pirates slumped offensively in the second half, but they still held Georgetown to only 29 second-half points.
