Pirates Stun Marquette with Game-Winning 18-0 Run
3/6/2019 8:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The junior from Trenton, N.J., scored a game-high 34 points, including 10 during the Seton Hall men's basketball team's game-ending 18-0 run, to vanquish a nine-point deficit and defeat No. 16 Marquette, 73-64, on Wednesday.
Powell, who posted his seventh 30-point game of the season, was brilliant down the stretch, hitting both the game-tying and game-winning three-pointers. He connected on four three-pointers for the game and went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
As brilliant as Powell was offensively, so was junior Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) defensively. The point guard locked down the BIG EAST leading scorer, Markus Howard, limiting him to just six points on 2-of-11 shooting. Howard entered the game averaging 25.5 points per game.
The victory is Seton Hall's fifth quadrant one win of the season, and its 11th total win in quadrants 1&2. Going into today, there were only 20 teams in the country who have at least five quadrant one wins and only 29 teams who have at least 10 Quad 1+2 wins.
Seton Hall's top four wins this season are a neutral site game against Kentucky (NET 5), road wins at Maryland (NET 28) and Creighton (NET 48) and home victories over St. John's (NET 61) and now Marquette (NET 26).

Turning Point:
Down 59-46 with under 10 minutes to go in the second half, The Hall turned a corner with a 9-0 run, and a jumper by sophomore Shavar Reynolds (Manchester, N.J.) cut Marquette's lead to only four points, 59-55, with 6:55 remaining. After the Golden Eagles ran their lead back up to nine, 64-55, Powell took over.
McKnight got Seton Hall's 18-0 run started with a driving layup, and then the next 10 points came from Powell, whose three-pointer at 2:55 tied the game and then his bomb triple with 2:28 left to play gave The Hall a 67-64 lead and riled out the Prudential Center faithful. From there, the Pirates defense did the rest, as they held Marquette scoreless for the final 4:40 that included the Golden Eagles going 0-for-10 from the field. The Pirates were 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.
