Pirates Succeeding Despite Huge Winds in Round One

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) is only one stroke off the individual lead, and the Seton Hall women's golf team is only a single stroke off the team lead in the first round of the 2019 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship. Rain and lightning caused the first round to be suspended with Pirate golfers on holes No. 10-14.
The teams will complete the first round tomorrow before beginning round two immediately thereafter.
Win has three birdies through 14 holes and is currently 3-over-par. She trails Xavier's Mikayla Fitzpatrick by one stroke.
As a team, the Pirates are 18-over-par and trail Xavier by only one stroke, despite brutally windy conditions. A gale force wind advisory was in effect for the Callawassie Island area today. Georgetown is currently in third place at 22-over-par. St. John's is fourth at 35-over-par, while Creighton is 36-over-par and Butler is 44-over-par. The latter three however, are on holes 15-17.
Sophomore Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) is only one stroke behind Win at 4-over-par through 13 holes. He is tied for third place overall. One stroke behind Kness is junior Carolina Ronchel Salas (Huelva, Spain). She is 5-over-par through 10 holes, while Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) is 6-over-par through 10 holes.
Playing in her first-ever BIG EAST Championship round, freshman Sarah Fouratt (Santa Maria, Calif.) is currently 13-over-par.

Six team, 54-hole, stroke play Championship. Teams compete in groups of three. The event is conducted over four days with each team's five members playing a practice round of 18 holes on day one, one 18-hole round on days two, three and four.
The Course:
The club features three nine-hole courses. The competition will play the first nine holes on the Dogwood Course and the second nine on the Magnolia Course. Designing Callawassie Island's award-winning championship 27-hole course, Tom Fazio took advantage of the island's natural beauty to create a juxtaposition of visual drama and superb playability. Magnificent live oaks and magnolias, as well as freshwater ponds and the surrounding saltwater marsh, come into play on most holes. Inspiring vistas and abundant wildlife make nature part of the golf experience.

For the BIG EAST Championship, the field is limited to only the six women's golf teams of the conference. This includes (in order of Golfstat ranking):, Seton Hall (98), Xavier (104), Georgetown (130), St. John's (196), Butler (220) and Creighton (234).

The field will have a shotgun restart beginning at 9:30 am with each golfer returning to the hole she was playing upon suspension. Round two will begin at approximately 10:15 am.
