Yeom Leads Pirates in Round One at BIG EAST

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) shot a 4-over-par, 76, to lead the Seton Hall men's golf team in round one of the 2019 BIG EAST Championship on Friday.
Yeom was even-par on the front nine, thanks to birdies on holes No. 5 and No. 8, and rolled to a 4-over-par, 76, in round one. He is currently tied for 13th among all individual golfers.
Collectively, Seton Hall is currently tied for fifth place after a 21-over-par, 309, on Friday. A pair of unlikely teams are on top of the leader board, with Creighton leading the way at 10-over-par and DePaul in second place at 13-over-par. Top-seeded Marquette is third, only six strokes ahead of The Hall. The wind picked up in the afternoon, which led to high scores from the tournament's top group.
Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) was impressive in his first-ever BIG EAST Championship round. The freshman used three birdies to fuel a 5-over-par, 77, in round one. He is currently tied for 18th place.
Only one stroke behind Ramachandran are teammates Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines). The high mark of Acevedo's first round was an eagle on the par-5, No. 6 hole. Like Ramachandran, the sophomore struggled a bit on the back nine and went on to shoot a 6-over-par, 78. Nagai had only one birdie, but tied for the team lead with 10 pars to fuel his 78.
Sophomore Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) rounded out the Pirates' lineup on Friday. He shot a 12-over-par, 84.

Championship Format:
Nine team, 54-hole, stroke play Championship. Teams compete in groups of three. The event is conducted over four days with each team's five members playing a practice round of 18 holes on day one, one 18-hole round on days two, three and four.
The team winner will earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the 2019 NCAA Championship field. Should the individual champion not be a member of the winning team, he will also earn a spot to the NCAA Championship.
The Course:
The club features three nine-hole courses. The competition will play the first nine holes on the Dogwood Course and the second nine on the Magnolia Course. Designing Callawassie Island's award-winning championship 27-hole course, Tom Fazio took advantage of the island's natural beauty to create a juxtaposition of visual drama and superb playability. Magnificent live oaks and magnolias, as well as freshwater ponds and the surrounding saltwater marsh, come into play on most holes. Inspiring vistas and abundant wildlife make nature part of the golf experience.

For the BIG EAST Championship, the field is limited to only the nine men's golf teams of the conference. This includes (in order of Golfstat ranking): Marquette, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Butler, Xavier, DePaul, St. John's, Creighton and Villanova.

Seton Hall will be paired with golfers from Butler and Villanova for Saturday's second round.
