TOLEDO, OHIO – Rising sophomore Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) is participating in the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, and after a victory on Wednesday, is on to the round of 32.
The annual event is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by July 20, and whose Handicap Index doesn't exceed 4.4, and is being played July 15-20 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Ramachandran became eligible for the tournament after shooting a 68 in a regional qualifier at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif. back on June 10.
The field of 156 competitors began the event with two rounds of stroke play, July 15-16, with the top 64 golfers moving on to match play. Ramachandran tied for 16th place with a 2-over-par, 73-71-144, which qualified him to advance.
On Wednesday, Ramachandran soundly defeated Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin, 4-and-3. The Seton Hall Pirate defeated his competitor on holes No. 3, 4, 7, 8 and 14, surrendering just No. 13 for a convincing match-play victory.
Ramachandran will now face China's Yuxin Lin in Thursday's round of 32 at 1:00 p.m.
Ramachandran is coming off a highly-successful freshman campaign at Seton Hall. A participant in all 11 tournaments during the 2018-19 year, he recorded a 73.94 stroke average, which ranked 11th-best in the BIG EAST Conference, and is the third-lowest average ever for a freshman at Seton Hall. Ramachandran had six sub-par rounds and two sub-par tournaments, including a career-best 3-under-par, 71-71-68-210, at the Princeton Invitational.
