WEST POINT, MISS. – Seton Hall rising junior Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) begins play today at the U.S. Women's Amateur at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
Kness will be one of 156 competitors in the prestigious golf tournament, which is open to any female amateur whose handicap index does not exceed 5.4. The event features two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 5-6), to dwindle the field down to 64 players. From there, the golfers will play one-on-one matches each day until a sole champion is crowned on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Kness qualified for the event with a 2-under-par, 70, at the U.S. Women's Am Qualifier on July 11 at Walnut Grove Country Club in Dayton, Ohio.
Named Seton Hall's Sophomore Female Athlete of the Year, Kness is coming off a strong sophomore campaign for the Pirates. A competitor in all 10 tournaments, she ranked eighth in the BIG EAST Conference with a 76.04 scoring average. Among her two top-10 finishes, she became only the second Pirate in program history to claim a second tournament individual title when she won the William & Mary Intercollegiate. Later in the year, Kness tied Seton Hall's par-71, three-round scoring record with a 3-over-par, 75-67-74-216, at the Edisto Island Invitational. Her second-round 67 is the lowest par-71 single round in program history.
