
Pirates Drop BIG EAST Opener at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) had a team-high seven kills, and senior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) finished one dig shy of a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Marquette, 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 13-25), in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Friday.

Wilkins had seven kills to go with two digs, while Cvelbar had a team-best 23 assists and nine digs.

SET 1:
Marquette never tailed in the opening set, using a 5-0 run with the score tied at four early to assume control. Down 19-14, Seton Hall scored three straight to close the gap, and block assists by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) cut the Golden Eagles' advantage to 19-17. Marquette closed out the set, however, with an 8-2 run to win, 25-19.

The early goings of set two were close, and a kill by Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) cut Seton Hall's deficit to 10-8. Marquette responded however, with a 9-2 run to take a commanding 19-10 lead. The Golden Eagles went on to claim the second set, 25-17.

Marquette led the final set wire-to-wire, racing out to a 14-5 lead. A block by Salkowski cut the Pirates' deficit to five points, 15-10, but the Golden Eagles took off again with an 8-1 run to take a 23-11 advantage. They went on to finish the match with a 25-13 set three win.

Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it travels to Chicago for a BIG EAST match at DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
