Omaha, Neb. -Â The Seton Hall men's basketball team swished a season-high 14 three-pointers, but No. 21 Oregon was up to the challenge, winning the battle in the paint to come away with a 83-70 victory over the Pirates Friday night at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Â
Senior Shavar Reynolds, Jr. (Manchester, N.J.) led the Pirates with a career-high 17 points and a career-high tying eight assists.
Â
Oregon outscored The Hall in the paint, 38-18, and out-rebounded the Pirates, 38-22, in what proved to be the difference.
Â
Turning Point
Seton Hall had to play from behind for most of the night, using the three ball to stay within striking distance. To start the second half, the Pirates got within three when Reynolds, Jr., hit a wing three-pointer, and senior Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) then caused a turnover on the other end, leading to a lob pass to junior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.), making it 36-33 Ducks.
Â
The Pirates hung around in the two-possession range for a while; sophomore Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) had an impressive layup and the foul in traffic on his third attempt underneath to make it a six-point game, 54-48, with 9:11 to go. But Oregon then ripped off a 9-0 run while keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard for nearly three minutes. LJ Figueroa, playing in his first game with Oregon after being granted a transfer waiver, seemingly put the game away with a second-chance layup at 6:51 after the Pirates had turned the ball over to make it a 15-point lead.
