WASHINGTON -Â The Seton Hall men's basketball team opened its road game at Georgetown with a 16-0 run and never looked back as senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 34 points to lead the Pirates to a 78-71 victory over the Hoyas Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.
Â
Seton Hall, winner of 11 of its last 12 games, is 9-1 overall in the BIG EAST and 5-0 in conference road games. One of the higher rated programs in the country, the win over Georgetown makes Seton Hall 12-5 against "Quad 1+2" opponents with five "Quad 1" road wins.
Â
Powell was dominant for the Pirates, shooting 12-for-24 from the field and making all six of his free throw attempts. He also had seven rebounds and three assists. It was his 12th 30-point game of his career.
Â
Three Pirates came close to double-doubles on the night. Senior Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 10 assists and eight points, junior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) had eight points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Â
Senior Romaro Gill (St. Thomas, Jamaica) protected the rim, matching his career-high in blocks with eight.
Â
Turning Point
Seton Hall made sure not to get off to a bad start, connecting on its first four three-point attempts, two by Rhoden and two by Powell, to ambush Georgetown for a 12-0 lead. The Hall's defense held the Hoyas to 0-for-7 shooting to start the game, and Gill's hookshot at 16:27 made it 16-0.
Â
Georgetown made it close in the first half, coming within six of the Pirates, before The Hall closed out with a 42-32 lead.
Â
In the second half, every time Georgetown clawed back, the Pirates answered. When the Hoyas came within four with 7:47 left, McKnight drilled a wing three-pointer to go back up seven. Javhon Blair hit a three with 4:16 remaining to pull Georgetown within four again, and Powell took over with a tough layup in the middle followed by Rhoden stripping Jagan Mosely for a steal and a fastbreak dunk assisted by McKnight to go back up eight with 1:54 to play.
