Xie, Pirates Card Strong Opening Round at Bandon Dunes

BANDON DUNES, ORE. – Freshman Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) fired a 4-under-par, 67, to pace the Seton Hall men's golf team to a second-place tie after round one of the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday.

Xie had only one blemish, a bogey on hole No. 10, in an otherwise brilliant first round. He had five birdies and 12 pars and is currently in second place among 100 individual golfers. He enters round two trailing the individual leader, Seattle's Nathan Cogswell, by only two strokes.

Collectively, Seton Hall had an excellent first round, firing an even-par, 284. The Hall is currently tied with No. 21 UCLA, three strokes behind the team leader, Oregon State. The field is packed with some of the best collegiate golf programs in the nation. Among those that currently trail the Pirates are No. 12 Washington and No. 34 Kansas.

Senior Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) also had a strong opening round for the Pirates, firing a 2-under-par, 69. He had two birdies and an eagle on the par-4, No. 4 hole. Chalk is currently tied for fourth overall.

Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) carded a 2-over-par, 73, on Sunday. He had an up-and-down round, with five birdies, but two double-bogeys. The sophomore is currently tied for 31^st place overall.

Rounding out the Pirates' lineup, both Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) shot a 4-over-par, 75. Acevedo had two birdies and 12 pars, while Tait carded three birdies and 11 pars.

Competing as an individual, Peter Tyler Po (Nasipit Cebu City, Philippines) is also tied with Tait and Acevedo at 4-over-par.

It began in 1999 with the opening of Bandon Dunes. Designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd, the course is perched on a bluff high above the Pacific Ocean. Bandon Dunes unfolds along pristine native dunes where expansive ocean views are revealed on nearly every hole. The course is completely natural and routed through an environment of indigenous vegetation. Beyond breathtaking scenery lies the game of golf in its truest form. This is a thinker's course. Winds are ever-present, and the varying elements create a new experience each time you play.

THE FIELD:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Idaho, the highly competitive field features 14 other teams including: Boise State, Cal Baptist, Denver, Fresno State, Kansas, Northern Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, Seattle, UCLA, Utah, Washington, Washington State.

TEE TIMES:
The field will play three rounds over three days with a shotgun start each day at 11:30 a.m. ET. For the opening round, the Pirates will be paired with golfers from Fresno State, Boise State and Denver.
