PHILADELPHIA - Seton Hall women's tennis junior Arina Gumerova (Ufa, Russia) had a fantastic Saturday at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of Penn, picking up a pair of victories to advance to the Round of 16. Her effort included an upset win over a top-seeded player from Cornell.
Overall, Seton Hall earned three singles wins over the course of the three-day tournament.
Gumerova, who earned a 17-32 ranking heading into the tournament, had a Round of 128 bye on Friday and then played Lehigh's Hamsa Javagal in the Round of 64, winning the match in straight sets. A few hours later, she competed against Cornell's Maria Adiaconitei, who came into the tournament with a 1-8 ranking. Gumerova won the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 6-3, to force a tiebreaker. The two women went back and forth, but Gumerova came up victorious at 14-12 to advance to the Round of 16.
On Sunday, Gumerova played for a spot in the ITA Super Regionals. She lost the first set to Buffalo's Pia Schwartz, 6-1, but came back to take the second set, 6-2. In the tiebreaker, this time, Gumerova fell just a bit short as Schwartz came away with the 10-8 edge to move on to Super Regionals in two weeks.
Seton Hall's other singles win on the weekend came from junior Aina Plana Ventosa (Barcelona, Spain), who dispatched Hofstra's Kayla Solagnier in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, in the Round of 128. She too went to a tiebreaker in her Round of 64 match against LIU's Sofiya Kuzina.
The Pirates will compete again next weekend when they head to Annapolis, Md., to play in the Navy Invitational.
