NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Seton Hall returns to action on Tuesday, November 16 for the Gavitt Tipoff Games when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a contest at No. 4 Michigan. Coverage will begin at 9:00 p.m. on FS1.
- The Pirates are off to their fifth 2-0 start over the last seven seasons.
- The Pirates have never beaten a top-five non-conference opponent on the road (0-5).
- Seton Hall's lone victory against a non-conference foe ranked in the top five was its 67-65 overtime win over No. 5 Temple in the NCAA Tournament's second round on March 19, 2000, a win that propelled the Pirates to the Sweet 16.
- The trip to Michigan will be a homecoming for Seton Hall forward and Detroit native Tray Jackson.
- The Pirates trounced Yale on Sunday, 80-44, at Prudential Center but will have to quickly turnaround to take on the Wolverines.
- 10 different Pirates found the scoring column against the Bulldogs and no one played more than 22 minutes.
- Seton Hall's combined margin of victory over its first two games is 80, its highest total since winning by a combined 82 points over its first two games back in 1956-57.
- The last time Seton Hall held two opponents to under 50 points in consecutive games was in 2005 against Northwestern (L, 42-44) and Morgan State (W, 93-46).
- In the opener, five Pirates scored in double-figures, highlighted by the first career double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds) by junior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) and a 15-point output in 18 minutes off the bench by graduate student Bryce Aiken (Randolph, N.J.).
- Graduate Student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) became the 46th player in program history to score 1,000 career points in the win over FDU on Nov. 10.
- The Pirates return four of their top six scorers from last season, add three transfers who have combined for over 1,400 career Div. I points scored and bring in a top-25 rated freshman recruiting class that will help Seton Hall once again compete for another conference championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
- The Pirates were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll and senior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) was named Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team.
- In head coach Kevin Willard's 11 seasons, the Pirates have met or exceeded their preseason poll rank eight times.
SETON HALL IN THE GAVITT GAMES
- The Pirates are 2-2 against Big Ten teams in the annual Gavitt Games, an early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and a basketball visionary.
- The Pirates are 1-1 in road games in the intra-conference series as they defeated Iowa on the road in 2016 (91-83) and fell at Nebraska in 2018 (80-57).
- This will be the Pirates' second top-5 matchup in the Gavitt Games following an epic 76-73 loss to No. 3 Michigan State at Prudential Center on Nov. 14, 2019.
INSIDE THE SERIES: MICHIGAN
- Seton Hall is 0-2 all-time against Michigan and both meetings took place in the 1989 calendar year.
- The first meeting was the 1989 National Championship game in Seattle -- considered still by many as one of the best national finals ever -- where the Pirates were seconds away from winning it all before Michigan pulled out an 80-79 victory in overtime.
- The latest meeting was a 91-86 win for the Wolverines on Dec. 23 1989 in Las Vegas. The game was the second half of a nationally-televised doubleheader.
RANKINGS NOTES & TIDBITS
- The Pirates are 2-17 all-time against teams ranked fourth in the country.
- Seton Hall's last win against a team ranked No. 4 was a 69-67 victory at Syracuse on Feb. 7, 2000.
- That win over the Orange is the Pirates' highest ranked road win in program history.
- The Hall's last road win against a top five team was a 78-70 victory at No. 5 Butler on Jan. 15, 2020.
