NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia) has earned his second BIG EAST Player of the Week award of the season after fantastic performances in leading the Pirates to a pair of road victories, the conference office announced Monday.
In a very efficient week, Mamukelashvili averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in Seton Hall's 2-0 week while shooting 50 percent from the field (13-for-26), 50 percent from three (4-for-8) and 86 percent at the free throw line (12-for-14).
At Providence, he fueled The Hall's second-half comeback with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, four rebounds and two steals and finished the game overall with a game-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Then at Connecticut, he had three critical second-half baskets to help the Pirates stave off a Huskies comeback; with UConn within two at 17:21, he buried a three-pointer; when the Huskies got within four at 9:29, he again hit a three-pointer; and at 5:16 with the lead again down to just five points, he drove baseline and slammed home a huge dunk to swing momentum back to The Hall. He finished with a game-high 22 points and was 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Mamukelashvili continues to build his resume for BIG EAST Player of the Year and Karl Malone Award consideration. He currently is second in the BIG EAST in scoring at 17.9 points per game and is one of only two BIG EAST players in the league to be in the top 15 in scoring, rebounding and assists.
Mamukelashvili and the Pirates are 11-8 overall, 8-5 in the BIG EAST and rank 46 in the NET and 32 in the KenPom. They return to action on Sunday with a home game against Marquette at Prudential Center at 3 p.m., live on FS1 and AM970 The Answer.
