ORLANDO - Former Seton Hall men's basketball stars Myles Powell, Quincy McKnight and Romaro Gill are all on opening day rosters for the start of the 2021 NBA G League season, which is taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort. Powell signed with the Westchester Knicks, McKnight signed with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Gill signed on with the Salt Lake City Stars.
Coincidentally, the first game of the season for Powell and McKnight is against one another as the Knicks and Mad Ants play Wednesday in HP Field House at 3:30 p.m., live on ESPN+. Gill and the Stars play Erie at 3 p.m., on NBA TV Twitch.
Powell, who was in preseason camp with the New York Knicks back in December, was one of the most decorated Seton Hall student-athletes in school history. He was the men's basketball team's first first-team All-American since 1953, first BIG EAST Player of the Year since 1993 and the 2020 recipient of the Jerry West National Shooting Guard of the Year award. He led the Pirates to the 2020 BIG EAST championship and was a significant part of three Pirates NCAA Tournament teams. He finished his career with 2,252 points, good for third all-time in school history, and is the program's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 348. He is the only Pirate in school history to capture back-to-back Haggerty Met Player of the Year honors, and he was the first to ever be named USBWA District II Player of the Year.
McKnight, who was selected by the Mad Ants in the second round of the 2021 NBA G League Draft (20th overall), was one of the most impactful transfers in Seton Hall history. In just two seasons, he accumulated 295 assists to place himself in the program's top-20 despite only playing 64 career games at The Hall. His 4.61 assists per game average ranks seventh all-time in program history. He was named All-BIG EAST honorable mention and first-team All-Met Writers in 2020 after he won the BIG EAST regular season assists championship with a 6.3 assists per game average during the 18-game league schedule. His yeoman's work on both ends of the floor helped the Pirates reach the 2019 NCAA Tournament and win the 2020 BIG EAST championship.
Gill, who was in preseason camp with the Utah Jazz back in December, had one of the most dramatic improvements in Seton Hall history. He went from playing 10.7 minutes per game as a junior and averaging 2.3 points to playing 24.5 minutes per game and averaging 7.8 points. 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game as a senior. He finished the 2019-20 season third in the nation in blocks and won the BIG EAST blocks title with a 3.4 average and the field goal percentage title with a .628 percentage during the 18-game conference schedule. His incredible senior season landed him BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player honors. He also was a first-team All-Met Writers selection and three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team.
Powell, McKnight and Gill are part of an NBA G League season that will feature a 15-game schedule from Feb. 10 – March 6. The top eight teams will advance to a single-elimination playoff, which will begin on March 8 and conclude with the NBA G Final presented by YouTube TV on March 11.
