West Caldwell, N.J. - Freshman Oliwia Kempinski made her collegiate debut and rallied from losing the first set to win her first career match, but the short-handed Seton Hall women's tennis team dropped its 2020-21 season opener to Stony Brook, 6-1, Friday night at Tiger Tennis & Fitness.
The Pirates only had five healthy players available to compete.
Making her debut at No. 5 singles, Kempinski actually got the Pirates on the board first with her victory. Although she lost the first set to Stony Brook's Kristine Theys, she bounced back with ease, taking the second set 6-3. Then in the decider, she cruised to a 6-0 sweep to take the match.
Though Seton Hall did not win at any other singles positions, two other matches proved to be tight. At No. 4 singles, freshman Emily O'Donovan was also making her debut and played Stony Brook's Chandrika Joshi to a tiebreaker in the first set before losing. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Hiba El Khalifi won her first set against Stony Brook's Mathilde Sreeves, but she dropped the second set and then lost a tight third set that went to 10-8.
Seton Hall will be back in action on Friday, March 12 at Drexel.
