South Orange, N.J. – Alexis Yetna, a former American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and a significant low-post presence, has signed a grant-in-aid offer to transfer to Seton Hall University as a graduate student and play basketball for the Pirates, head coach Kevin Willard announced Wednesday. Yetna spent the last four years at the University of South Florida, where he will earn his bachelor's degree later this semester.
"We are excited to welcome Alexis to the Seton Hall Family," Willard said. "He is a great addition to our frontcourt; he's physical, crafty and a ferocious rebounder. He has tremendous touch around the rim, but is also capable of shooting from the perimeter. We think he's a perfect fit for our system, and we're looking forward to helping him continue his development here at Seton Hall."
Originally from Paris, France, Yetna burst onto the college basketball scene as a redshirt freshman for the Bulls in 2018-19, averaging 12.3 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. He finished that season with the most rebounds ever by a USF and American Athletic Conference freshman, and second-most in school history overall. He also was top-25 in the nation in rebounds per game and double-doubles (15). At season's end, he captured AAC Freshman of the Year and All-Freshman team honors.
Yetna's two most eye-popping performances of his freshman season were a 28-point, 13-rebound day at East Carolina in which he made 11 of his 13 field goal attempts and a 26-point, 13-rebound effort at DePaul in the CBI championship series in which he was 11-for-12 from the field.
After missing 2019-20 due to injury, Yetna returned to the court this past season and was averaging 10.5 points and 7.6 rebounds on Jan. 10 when the Bulls had to go on pause due to COVID-19. He finished the season with averages of 9.5 points and 7.3 rebounds. He was dominant in a win at Cincinnati this past season with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, and he was a force against UCF with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Yetna is joining the perennial BIG EAST contending Pirates, who are coming off their sixth straight top-four finish in the league that includes winning the 2016 conference tournament championship and 2020 regular season title. Alongside Yetna, the Pirates have added graduate transfer guard Jamir Harris and are bringing in a top-25 rated freshman recruiting class that will help Seton Hall once again compete for another conference championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
