South Orange, N.J. - Two Seton Hall men's basketball graduates will be playing for their countries at the Tokyo Olympics that begin this week as Patrik Auda will represent Czech Republic and Aaron Geramipoor will represent Iran. The games tip off on Saturday, July 24 at Saitama Super Arena.
As luck would have it, Auda and Geramipoor will in fact face each other right away. Czech Republic and Iran were both placed into Group A and will meet on Saturday at 9 p.m., Eastern, which is 10 a.m., Sunday in Tokyo. In order for a team to advance to the knockout stage, it must place in the top two of its group or be one of the two highest-ranking third place teams.
Auda, who appeared in 90 career games for the Pirates from 2010-14, and his Czech Republic teammates enjoyed a thrilling run-up to Olympic qualification. Earlier this month, the Czechs participated in one of four FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournaments. Up in Victoria, Canada, Czech Republic defeated Canada in the semifinals and then toppled Greece, 97-72, in the final to secure its spot in Tokyo. Auda was terrific and critical to Czech Republic's surge, averaging 14.0 points and 3.5 rebounds. He scored 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the final round vs. Greece.
Geramipoor, who played 92 career games at Seton Hall from 2010-14, and his Iranian teammates have been tuning up for the Olympics for nearly two years. Iran earned its Olympic spot back at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup when it defeated Philippines to finish the tournament as the highest ranking team in Asia. In that game, which took place in China, Geramipoor was solid with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and over the course of five games in the tournament, he averaged 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds.
Auda and Geramipoor both earned their Seton Hall undergraduate degrees in 2014. Auda was a finance major and Geramipoor was as social and behavioral sciences major.
