Schenectady, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team got the 2021-22 season off to a great start with a very strong performance at the Siena Invitational this weekend. Two Pirates won their individual flights and two doubles pairings won their flight as well. Seven out of the eight Pirates who competed in singles won at least one match.Â
Junior Arina Gumerova enjoyed an oustanding weekend, winning the A flight singles title. Her stiffest competition came in the first round as she defeated Siena's Laia Giralt, 8-5. She went on to win three more matches without losing more than four games. In the final on Saturday, she topped Lafayette's Olivia Boeckman, 8-3.Â
Gumerova also teamed with sophomore Anastasia Petrova to win the A doubles championship. The pair cruised into the finals before facing stiff competition from their own teammates in juniors Hiba El Khalifi and Aina Plana Ventosa, who won three doubles matches to get to the final. Ultimately, Gumerova and Petrova prevailed in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
On her singles circuit, Plana Ventosa won three times to claim the B flight championship. She outlasted Colgate's Rebecca Wolf in the final, 8-7 (4).
Also capturing a title was the C doubles tandem of sophomores Emily O'Donovan and Oliwia Kempinski, who won their quarterfinals and semifinals to face Emma Shea and Jaida Borg of Niagara in the final. The Pirates pairing won with ease, 6-2.
Also showing strong performances were freshman Arabella Moen, who won three times in the C singles flight to advance to the final before losing, and O'Donovan, who just narrowly missed winning the D singles flight title; she cruised to the final but lost in a tiebreaker to Rider's Ally Garofoli, 8-7 (3).
The Pirates will resume fall season action on Friday, Oct. 1 with a trip to Philadelphia for the ITA Regionals.
