South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall baseball alum Andrew Politi was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday evening at the Winter Meetings in San Diego.
Baltimore gives Politi a spot on the active roster following a strong season between Double A and Triple A in the Boston Red Sox organization. Politi posted a 2.34 ERA and a WHIP on 1.00 in 69.1 innings of work. He also helped in a combined no-hitter for Worcester in Triple-A on August 5.
A hard-throwing right-hander, Politi saw action as both a starter and reliever during his three years on the field at Seton Hall. He didn't have fewer than 16 appearances in all three years, and blossomed as a key late inning option for the Pirates as a senior. Named to the 2018 BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team, Politi made two appearances and allowed just one run over nine innings, while striking out a tournament-high 15 batters.
Â
Politi allowed just four runs over his last nine appearances of the season, which includes a four-inning hitless outing with nine strikeouts against Villanova, and a 5.2 inning, one-hit with nine strikeouts performance against Butler in an elimination game of the BIG EAST Championship. In his junior year, he set career-highs in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, and opponents hit a career-low .203 against him.
Â
As a senior, he pitched to a 3.13 earned run average in 16 appearances.
Â
For his three-year career in South Orange, Politi made 50 appearances and struck out 132 batters in only 94.2 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .218 against him.
Â
A two-time Academic All-Star, Politi received Seton Hall's Academic Merit Award for graduating with at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.
