
Tait, Xie Fuel Pirates to Fourth Place at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA. – Graduate student Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) shot a 1-under-par, 70, to fuel the Seton Hall men's golf team to a fourth-place team finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Easter Sunday.

Tait used four birdies and 11 pars to power his strong final round. For the tournament, he placed fifth with an even-par, 74-70-213. Tait finished three strokes behind the individual co-champions, James Allen and Patrick Sheehan, both of Penn State. It's Tait's fourth career top-5 finish and ninth top-10 effort.

As a team, the Pirates shot a 12-over-par, 296, on Sunday. For the tournament, they were 19-over-par with a 285-290-296-871. Host Penn State rallied to win the team title at 12-over-par, followed by Michigan State at 14-over-par and St. Mary's at 17-over-par.

Two other BIG EAST competitors were also in the field with Georgetown finishing in eighth place at 35-over-par and Connecticut tying for 10th at 44-over-par.

The top Pirate golfer for the tournament was junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China). He had two birdies and 12 pars to shoot a 2-over-par, 73, in round three. For the event, he tied for third place, only two strokes off the lead, with a 1-under-par, 68-71-73-212. It's Xie's third career top-5 finish and sixth top-10 effort.

Sophomore Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) had three birdies on Sunday in route to a 4-over-par, 75. For the tournament, he tied for 23rd place overall with an 8-over-par, 73-73-75-221.

Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) remained tied after three rounds following a 7-over-par, 78, on Sunday. For the tournament, Acevedo shot a 15-over-par, 78-72-78-228, while O'Brien had a 15-over-par, 75-75-78-228.

In addition to Seton Hall and host Penn State, the field featured 12 other teams including: Bowling Green, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, George Mason, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Michigan State, Oakland, Richmond and Saint Mary's. Two additional BIG EAST competitors are also in the field, Connecticut and Georgetown.

The teams played five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.
