Bechadergue, Fouratt Lead Seton Hall in BIG EAST Round One
4/21/2022 5:28:00 PM | Women's Golf
PINE MOUNTAIN, GA. – Graduate student Margot Bechadergue (Aix-En-Provence, France) and senior Sarah Fouratt (Santa Maria, Calif.) each shot a 2-over-par, 74, to pace the Seton Hall women's golf team to a fifth-place standing after round one of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at Callaway Resort & Gardens.
Â
After a bogey on hole No. 2, Bechadergue had a par or birdie on her next 10 holes. She was 1-under-par on the front nine to lead the Pirates at the turn. On the back, Bechadergue was solid, but her approach on the 18th hole sailed over the green and she had to settle for her lone double-bogey of the day.Â
Â
Fouratt struggled early, bogeying holes 4-5-6, but bounced back nicely with birdies in three of the next five holes. She had the best back-nine on the team, shooting even-par on the second half of the round.
Â
Bechadergue and Fouratt are tied for seventh place overall and trail a trio of individual leaders by five strokes entering Friday's second round.
Â
As a team, the Pirates had a very "Jekyll and Hyde" opening round. The Hall was brilliant on the front nine, shooting a collective 1-over-par through nine holes, but it struggled mightily on the longer, more difficult back-nine. Through 18 holes, the Pirates are tied with St. John's for fifth place following an 18-over-par, 306. Xavier has an 11-stroke lead on the field at 1-over-par. Creighton is currently in second place, just six strokes ahead of Seton Hall.
Â
Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain) played well in her first-ever BIG EAST Championship round. The freshman was even-par after birdies on the first and fourth holes at the turn. Sarrias Pro had a 3-over-par, 6, on the par-3, 14th hole, but bounced back nicely to shoot just 1-over-par over the final four holes. She's currently tied for 19th place after a 6-over-par, 78.
Â
Like Sarrias Pro, Ludovica Busetto (Padova, Italy) had a stellar front-nine, shooting even par thanks to birdies on the fourth and ninth holes. She struggled on the back-nine though, collecting bogeys or worse on six of the nine holes, including a 3-over-par, 7, on the par-4, 13th hole. Busetto carded an 8-over-par, 80, in round one.
Â
Ginevra Zavagli (Rome, Italy) was 4-over-par on both the front and back nines on Thursday.  She was 1-under-par through the first four holes, but faded thereafter. She too is 8-over-par after 18 holes with an 80.

THE COURSE
Callaway Resort & Gardens' golf pedigree stretches back more than six decades to 1949, when architect J.B. McGovern, with considerable input from Cason Callaway, designed the first nine holes of the Lake View Course. Completed and opened in 1951, Lake View perfectly captured Mr. Callaway's vision that "playing golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings."
Â
The Callaways understood the beauty and importance of golf. Mr. Callaway was on the founding Board of Trustees of the Georgia State Golf Association. Almost from the beginning, the Gardens served as a competition venue, with Jack Key of Columbus, Ga. winning Callaway's first-ever tournament, the 1951 Men's One-day Golf Tourney.
Â
This challenging, but playable layout on the Mountain View course will test your strategic and shot-making abilities, just as it did for PGA Tour pros when it hosted the Buick Challenge from 1991 to 2002. The list of winners is a who's-who of Tour stars, with champions including Davis Love III, David Duval, Steve Elkington, David Toms, and Jonathan Byrd.
