Zavagli Guides Pirates into Fourth After Two Rounds at BIG EAST
4/22/2022 5:11:00 PM | Women's Golf
Sarah Fouratt remains Seton Hall's individual leader and is tied for ninth overall entering Saturday's final round.
PINE MOUNTAIN, GA. – Sophomore Ginevra Zavagli (Rome, Italy) fired the top Pirate round of the tournament so far, a 1-over-par, 73, to lift the Seton Hall women's golf team to a fourth-place standing after 36 holes of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship.
Â
Zavagli set the positive tone on her round early, birdying the first two holes. She went on to collect four birdies in all in the second round and was able to shave off seven strokes from her first-round score. For the tournament, she's tied for 15th place at 9-over-par with an 80-73-153.
Â
The Pirates improved as a team as well, shaving four strokes off their first-round score and carding a 14-over-par, 302. Whereas it was the back nine that proved costly to The Hall in round one, it was the front nine today that prevented the Pirates from making a major move up the leader board. Still, The Hall's 302 enabled it to hop over Butler into fourth place with 18 holes remaining. The Pirates are 32-over-par with a 306-302-608, and trail the team leader, Xavier by 26 strokes. Georgetown is in second place at 15-over-par, while Creighton in third at 25-over-par.
Â
The top Pirate of the tournament continues to be senior Sarah Fouratt (Santa Maria, Calif.), who is still in line for her first career BIG EAST Championship Top-10 finish. On Friday, Fouratt struggled on the front-nine, carding a 3-over-par, 7, on the ninth hole, but bounced back in a big way on the back nine. Fouratt opened the second nine with birdies on holes 10, 11 and 13 and went on to card a 4-over-par, 76.
Â
For the tournament, Fouratt is tied for ninth place overall with a 6-over-par, 74-76-150. Creighton freshman Katherine Lemke is the individual leader at 4-under-par with 18 holes remaining.
Â
Graduate student Margot Bechadergue (Aix-En-Provence, France) provided the most-exciting moment of the day for Seton Hall, an eagle on the par-3, second hole. It followed a birdie on the first hole, which got Bechadergue off to a strong start. She finished the day with a 6-over-par, 78. For the tournament, she is tied for 13th place with an 8-over-par, 74-78-152.
Â
Only one stroke behind Bechadergue, and tied with Zavagli, is freshman Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain), who continues to impress in her first BIG EAST Championship. The Pirate newcomer shaved three strokes off her first-round score and used 14 pars, including nine of her last 10 holes, to shoot a 3-over-par, 75, on Friday. For the tournament, she's tied for 15th with a 9-over-par, 78-75-153.
Â
Rounding out the Pirates' lineup today was junior Ludovica Busetto (Padova, Italy), who had a strong 2-over-par back nine in route to an 8-over-par, 80, for round two. For the tournament, she is 16-over-par with an 80-80-160.

THE COURSE
Callaway Resort & Gardens' golf pedigree stretches back more than six decades to 1949, when architect J.B. McGovern, with considerable input from Cason Callaway, designed the first nine holes of the Lake View Course. Completed and opened in 1951, Lake View perfectly captured Mr. Callaway's vision that "playing golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings."
Â
The Callaways understood the beauty and importance of golf. Mr. Callaway was on the founding Board of Trustees of the Georgia State Golf Association. Almost from the beginning, the Gardens served as a competition venue, with Jack Key of Columbus, Ga. winning Callaway's first-ever tournament, the 1951 Men's One-day Golf Tourney.
