Newark, N.J. - Turnovers plagued the Seton Hall men's basketball team on Saturday as the Pirates fell to No. 20 Marquette, 74-53, at Prudential Center.
Junior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 10 points and five assists while senior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) and freshman Tae Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) chipped in with eight points a piece.
How It Happened
Marquette opened the scoring with a three-point basket but the Pirates used an 8-0 run that capped off by a dunk by junior Femi Odukale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to take an 8-3 lead. However, turnovers would plague The Hall in the first 20 minutes as the Golden Eagles scored 16 points off of 13 Seton Hall turnovers. Despite the miscues, the Pirates stayed within striking distance as junior Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) nailed a three-pointer to tie the score at 27-27 with 5:07 left in the first half. Marquette's Kam Jones would respond by scoring eight of the Golden Eagles' final 10 points of the half as they went into the locker room with a 37-29 lead.
After Jones completed a traditional three-point play, the Pirates trimmed their deficit to single digits as Samuel connected on a deep jumper from the baseline and graduate student KC Ndefo (Elmont, N.Y.) came up with a steal and score in transition that made it a seven-point game, 40-33. A 13-4 run for the Golden Eagles would quickly dispel the Pirates' attempt at a comeback though as Marquette took a commanding 53-36 advantage with 15:15 to go. The Pirates would make another run with under 10 minutes left when a three by senior Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) cut Marquette's lead to 14, 62-48. The Pirates came up with a steal on the defensive end but the Golden Eagles stole it back and turned it into a transition dunk.
