
Pirates Open Spring Season With Sweep of Binghamton

West Point, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team opened the spring 2023 season with a dominant performance, sweeping Binghamton, 7-0, Saturday night at Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the campus of Army West Point.
The win was the first career victory for interim head coach James Enzler. It was also Seton Hall's eighth straight win over the Bearcats.
The Pirates lost only one set in singles competition, taking all six matches. Arina Gumerova was strong at No. 1, taking a first-set tiebreaker over Lara Kaplan before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set to take the match. Aina Plana Ventosa went to a third set with Natalia Aruj, and she took the third set, 6-3 to secure the win. At No. 3, Oliwia Kempinski needed to get to seven points in each set, but she swept Caterina Casadei.
Emily O'Donovan had a strong day in both doubles and singles, and despite getting some pressure from Abby Ackroyd at No. 4 singles, she completed a sweep, 6-3, 7-5.
Arabella Moen and Hiba El Khalifi made quick work of their opponents; Moen defeated Maria Pereira at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1, and El Khalifi beat Bridget Martin, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
O'Donovan and Plana Ventosa had a solid doubles performance at No. 2, topping Casadei and Kaplan, 6-3. Kempinski teamed with Anastasia Petrova, who is returning from an injury that kept her out for a year, at No. 3 doubles and defeated Ackroyd and Pereira, 7-5.
