West Point, N.Y. - Oliwia Kempinski had a strong day, and the Seton Hall women's tennis team was a tiebreaker away from a win, getting narrowly edged by Sacred Heart in the team score, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the campus of Army West Point.
Kempinski was dominant at No. 3 singles, consistently moving her opponent Aina Garriga and giving her no opportunities to come back from an early deficit. She easily completed the sweep, 6-3, 6-0. She was also strong at No. 3 doubles with teammate Anastasia Petrova, but the match did not finish as Sacred Heart had already clinched the doubles point.
Hiba El Khalifi and Arabella Moen were also singles winners for a second straight day. Moen was a straight sets victor at No. 5, beating Olivia Kharkover 6-3, 6-3, and El Khalifi cruised past Flavia Rambaldi at No. 6, 6-4, 6-0.
The match came down to No. 4 singles as Emily O'Donovan took set one over Ciara O'Toole, 6-3, but then dropped the second set, 6-1. In the tiebreaker, the two went back and forth, but O'Toole came up victorious, 12-10, to clinch victory for the Pioneers.
Seton Hall will now host its home opener Friday night against Army West Point inside Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness in New Providence, N.J. Match time is 7:15 p.m. On Saturday night, the Pirates will host Monmouth at 5:45 p.m.
