Pirates Persevere Past Foul Trouble, Complete Sweep of St. John's

Guards Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) and Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were spectacular for the Pirates as Dawes poured in 21 points and connected on four three-pointers and Richmond delivered an electric all-around performance of 15 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Seton Hall sweeps the regular season series from St. John's, won at Carnesecca Arena for the first time since 2010 and now has won six of its last seven games to improve to 7-5 in BIG EAST play.
How It Happened
After St. John's made its first basket of the game, Seton Hall went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Richmond coast-to-coast layup, that put the Pirates in front by five, 7-2. A monster jam by Ndefo, one of multiple by him in the first half, and a layup by Samuel made it 15-10 in favor of the Pirates with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half. St. John's would have their way over the next eight minutes as the Red Storm took a commanding 13 point lead, with 4:19 to play before the half.
That's when head coach Shaheen Holloway turned to his bench for help. Freshman Jaquan Sanders (Queens, N.Y.) cut to the rim and Richmond found him underneath for an easy two that cut the Pirate deficit to 11, 32-22, before three consecutive three-point baskets from graduate student Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J.), Sanders and Senior Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) quickly made it a two-point game, 33-31.
Seton Hall trailed 35-32 at halftime and it struggled through the first three minutes of the second stanza and trailed by six, 38-32. However, five straight points by Richmond, a layup by junior Femi Odukale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) off of an inbounds play and three-pointer by Dawes helped the Pirates regain the lead, 42-38. A 7-0 Red Storm spurt gave them a seven-point advantage, 53-46, with under 12 minutes to go but the Pirates switched to a zone defense and it befuddled the Johnnies. The Pirates stayed hot from deep in the process and went on an 18-4 run to take a seven-point lead, 64-57. Five straight points scored by St. John's Joel Soriano made it a six-point contest with 1:03 to go but six consecutive free throws made by Dawes and Harris helped Seton Hall ice the game.
