
Pirates Fourth-Set Rally Highlights Victory over GMU

The Hall improves to 4-1 and will look for a sweep of the Seton Hall Classic on Saturday.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a team-high 13 kills, while Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) tallied double-doubles as the Seton Hall volleyball team defeated George Mason, 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 26-24), on Friday.

After Seton Hall claimed the first two sets, George Mason won the third, and decidedly had all the momentum well into the fourth set. Trailing 24-20, the Pirates staved off four set points and pulled off an improbable 26-24 victory to claim the match.

Matheny had a team-best 13 kills, only three attack errors, a .385 attack percentage and seven digs. Both Jakubowski and Klungel tallied their third double-doubles of the season. Jakubowski had 20 assists and 11 digs, while Klungel notched 22 assists and 10 digs.

SET 1:
Trailing 5-4 early, The Hall scored five of the next six points to take a 10-6 lead and never trailed again. A kill by Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) gave the Pirates their largest lead of the set, 18-12, and it was another kill by Tulli that capped a 25-22 opening set victory.

SET 2:
Seton Hall never trailed in the second set, running out to a 9-3 lead, which forced an early George Mason timeout. The Patriots cut The Hall's lead to 20-17 late, but the Pirates responded by finishing the set with five straight points. The Hall had their highest attack percentage of the match, .300, in the second set and held GMU to .000.

SET 3:
The third set was very different, and it was George Mason that recorded a match-high .344 attack percentage. The Pirates never led in the third. With the set tied at nine, the Patriots went on a 13-3 run to take a commanding 22-12 advantage. The Pirates cut their deficit in half, but George Mason cruised to a 25-19 third-set victory.

The fourth set featured nine ties, but George Mason pulled away late. With the score tied at 13, the Patriots went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-13 advantage. The Pirates rallied, and cut their deficit to 22-20, but back-to-back points by GMU put them in set point, 24-20. Coming out of a timeout, Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) caught fire, and three of her kills along with a GMU attack error, tied the set at 24. A kill by Tulli put The Hall in match point, and a block by Tulli and Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) capped the Pirates 6-0 match-ending run.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they conclude play at the Seton Hall Classic. The Hall will host Saint Peter's at 3:00 p.m.
