Newark, N.J. - Down starting point guard Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and despite a career-high 26 points from Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.), the Seton Hall men's basketball team couldn't hold on to a 10-point second half lead in a 67-63 setback against Providence at Prudential Center.
Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 15 points and Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a solid all-around game in his first career start with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.
How It Happened
After a back-and-forth slugfest in the opening minutes of the first half, a Providence three-pointer with 9:12 left before halftime gave the Friars their largest lead of the game at four, 17-13. The Pirates answered with a 7-0 run that featured five points from Hutchins-Everett and put The Hall in front by three, 20-17.
Providence regained the lead thanks to three made threes that gave them a seven-point advantage, 30-23, at the 2:52 mark of the first half. Dawes then helped spark a Seton Hall run with a steal and score fastbreak layup. A Providence technical foul led to two made Dawes free throws before a Davis layup and two free throws by Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) gave the Pirates a 31-30 lead going into halftime.
Dawes caught fire at the start of the second half where he scored seven of the Pirates' next nine points that extended The Hall's lead to five, 40-35, with 17:09 left. Later, Dawes would convert another steal and score that gave the Pirates a nine-point lead, 46-37, and his second three of the night pushed The Hall's lead to 10, 51-41, with just over 12 minutes left.
After the Dawes three, Providence used an 18-4 run that spanned over six minutes to take a 60-55 lead with 5:27 left. Despite holding the Friars scoreless from the field the final five minutes of the game, the Pirates couldn't come up with answers on offense down the stretch to complete the comeback.
