
Freshmen Lead Pirates in Round One at Albany

DELMAR, N.Y. – Freshman Marta Aguilar (Casaras Malaga, Spain) shot a 4-over-par, 74, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a third-place standing after round one at the 2024 UAlbany Invitational on Saturday.

Aguilar had three birdies and nine pars in route to a 4-over-par, 74, and is currently tied for seventh place among 62 individual golfers. Lehigh's Reese Hannon and Boston University's Christy Chen share the individual lead at 1-over-par with 18 holes left to play.

As a team, The Hall shot a 23-over-par, 303, in round one. Lehigh is the team leader in the clubhouse after a 14-over-par, 294. Merrimack is currently second at 17-over-par. Seton Hall's lone BIG EAST competition, St. John's, is currently seventh at 27-over-par.

Fellow freshman Amelie Gras (Elancourt, France) was only one stroke worse than Aguilar. She had four birdies to fuel a 5-over-par, 75 and is tied for 14th overall.

Senior Ana Sarrias Pro (Cadiz, Spain) and sophomore Kasumi Tran (Swansea, Wales) are currently tied for 28th place after a 7-over-par, 70. Sarrias Pro had two birdies, while Tran had three.

Junior Anne Sofie-Ekman (Copenhagen, Denmark) is currently tied for 33rd place following an 8-over-par, 78.

THE COURSE
Normanside Country Club opened its golf course in 1927. The course was designed by William Harries. During its many years of play, it has hosted many New York State Golf Association and United States Golf Association events. Notable among them are the 1952 Empire State open and the 1996 NYSGA Mid-Amateur Championship and the 2003 & 2008 NYS Senior Amateur Championship. Normanside has also served as a qualifying site for state and national events.

In addition to Seton Hall and host UAlbany, the field is comprised of 10 other teams including: Boston University, Fairfield, FDU, Lehigh, Merrimack, Navy, Niagara, Sacred Heart and Siena. Also joining the field is BIG EAST rival St. John's.

THE FORMAT
Teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.

THE SCHEDULE
The field will play 18 holes on two days for two rounds total. The Hall will tee off in round one from the No. 10 hole beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Pirates will be paired with golfers from St. John's and Sacred Heart.Â
