New Providence, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team secured the doubles point against Stony Brook, leading to a very strong match in a 4-2 victory over the Seawolves Friday night at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness.Â
"Our girls played the most complete tennis from start to finish today," said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "In my short time at Seton Hall, I have never seen us from start to finish play with such focus and determination to win. A lot of players moved around in the lineup tonight, and they did a fantastic job of knowing what they needed to do and securing the win. I'm really proud of these girls tonight."
Seton Hall had a great doubles showing as Imogen Brooker and Niamh Campbell won their fourth spring match together with a 6-2 victory over Mia Palladino and Darian Perfiliev at No. 2 doubles. After Stony Brook won at No. 1, the doubles point came down to No. 3, and Anastasia Sereda and Aili Hietala shined with a 6-4 win.
In singles, Anastasia Sereda got the Pirates off to a fast start with a quick first set win, and she ended up with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Elena Lobo-Corral at No. 2. Her victory was shortly followed by Aina Plana Ventosa improving to 6-0 in the spring as she dispatched Kristi Boro in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to put Seton Hall up 3-0. Plana Ventosa's six-match winning streak is a career high.
Stony Brook won at No. 4 singles, but the Pirates clinched victory when Aili Hietala finished her match at No. 6 over Sara Annamaria Medved, 6-4, 6-4. Arabella Moen, who battled back from a deficit to take the first set, was also leading in her match at No. 5 before the Pirates sealed their win.
It's a quick turnaround for the Pirates, who drive to Bethlehem, Pa., in the morning to face Lehigh at 1 p.m.
